ABOUT OSCAR NIEMEYER
Oscar Niemeyer (1907–2012), born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, was a revolutionary architect and designer who redefined modernism with his bold, curvilinear forms and innovative use of reinforced concrete. Inspired by Brazil’s sweeping landscapes, the human figure, and Baroque sensibilities, Niemeyer created structures that blended functionality with artistic expression, such as the Cathedral of Brasília and the Palácio da Alvorada, central to the utopian vision of Brasília. Beyond architecture, Niemeyer’s influence extended to furniture design, where his creations echoed the same fluid, organic lines seen in his buildings. Iconic pieces like the "Rio Chaise Lounge" and the "Alta" armchair exemplify his ability to translate his architectural vision into elegant, sculptural furnishings, marrying comfort with modernist aesthetics. Rooted in his Marxist ideals, Niemeyer’s designs were not only visually striking but also reflected his commitment to social progress. Celebrated in exhibitions at the Centre Pompidou and MoMA, his work remains a powerful testament to the enduring connection between architecture, design, and human experience.
