Urushi lacquered coffee table, double X-shaped legs
Provenance: Baron Guy de Rothschild (1909–2007), Hôtel Lambert, Paris
H 52 × L 153 × P 37 cm / H 20.5 × L 60.2 × P 14.6 in.
The elongated top rests on double X-shaped legs, creating a structure that feels both stable and quietly dynamic. The Genji-Kō pattern, rooted in classical Japanese court culture, brings an intellectual refinement to the surface, a poetic reference expressed through the depth and subtle glow of urushi. The lacquer does not simply decorate the table; it gives the form its presence, absorbing light and returning it with restrained intensity.
Formerly in the collection of Guy de Rothschild at the Hôtel Lambert, within the rich and layered history of the place, the piece carries its past with discretion. We cannot know what it has witnessed, nor what remains embedded within its surface. The past is never fully readable; it lingers, leaving space for imagination.
