ABOUT GEORGE NAKASHIMA
George Katsutoshi Nakashima, born in 1905 in Spokane, Washington, left an indelible mark on the American Studio furniture movement with his unique approach to woodworking and design. Trained at M.I.T., Nakashima, unlike contemporaries favoring industrial methods, embraced a more personalized and craft-centric philosophy. His extensive travels, including internment during World War II, influenced his aesthetic, blending modernist and traditional design elements. Renowned for handcrafted tables and benches that reveal the natural beauty of wood, Nakashima's signature features include preserving the "free edge" and using "butterfly" joints. Collaborations with manufacturers, such as Knoll, expanded the reach of his iconic designs. A pivotal moment came in 1973 with a commission from Nelson Rockefeller for a 200-piece suite. Nakashima's legacy endures in prestigious institutions and the homes of influential figures, while his daughter, Mira Nakashima, continues to carry forward his craft and design philosophy.
