ABOUT LUIZ PHILIPPE CARNEIRO DE MENDOCA
Luiz Philippe Carneiro de Mendonça, born in 1957 into an art-inclined family, is a Brazilian artist celebrated for his unique creations characterized by meticulous material selection, adept manipulation of scale, and a touch of humor. With early exposure to the art world through his father's role as the Director of the Museum of Modern Art in Belo Horizonte, Carneiro's artistic journey evolved after graduating in Industrial Design. Transitioning from a design career in Minas Gerais and Paris to settling in Rio de Janeiro in the 1980s, he seamlessly blended his design expertise with a personal artistic practice, often employing a clever use of found materials. Inspired by his childhood in his family's iron mill, his works, crafted from iron, steel, and stone, pay homage to navigators and exhibit influences from Dada and surrealism. Notable among his creations is "Untitled (Chair with Legs Crossed)," showcasing Carneiro's fusion of design finesse and an affinity for the whimsical. His art, featured in solo exhibitions across Brazil, London, and Rome, can be found in prestigious institutions, including the Museu Mineiro and the Museum of Modern Art in Rio de Janeiro, leaving an enduring mark on the global art scene.
