ABOUT REI KAWAKUBO

Rei Kawakubo, born in Tokyo in 1942, is a self-taught fashion designer renowned for her avant-garde creations and her label, Comme des Garçons (CDG), founded in 1969. Rejecting conventional norms, she offered women clothing for self-expression, not for male approval, challenging Western ideals of sexiness. Partnering with Yohji Yamamoto, they shocked the fashion world in Paris in 1981 with their unconventional designs. Kawakubo expanded CDG globally, introducing lines like Homme and launching boutiques worldwide. Her innovative approach extended beyond fashion, as seen in her magazine Six and pioneering pop-up stores and Dover Street Market with her husband, Adrian Joffe.
