Gio Ponti (1891–1979) was a defining force in 20th-century Italian design, whose work bridged classicism and modernity with remarkable fluidity. After graduating from the Politecnico di Milano in 1921, he rose to prominence as artistic director of Richard Ginori, revolutionizing porcelain with neoclassical yet radically modern motifs—an achievement awarded at the 1925 Exposition des Arts Décoratifs in Paris. In 1928, he founded Domus magazine, establishing a platform that would shape global design discourse for decades. His architectural practice spanned continents, from the soaring Pirelli Tower in Milan (1956–60, with Nervi and Fornaroli) to the Denver Art Museum. In furniture, his collaborations with Cassina and others produced enduring icons like the Superleggera chair (1957), a masterpiece of weightless engineering and elegant restraint. Ponti’s legacy endures as a celebration of beauty, lightness, and a distinctly Italian synthesis of craft and industry.
