ABOUT PIERRE LEGRAIN
Pierre Legrain holds a pivotal, transitional place in 1920s French design. Starting as a bookbinder, his career shifted when couturier Jacques Doucet commissioned him to design custom bindings and interiors. Legrain synthesized Cubist geometry and non-Western artistic forms, such as African seatings and forms, with rich traditional materials like ebony, shagreen, parchment and mother of pearl. While tied to the luxury of high Art Deco, he favored structural tension and rupture over the seamless harmony of contemporaries like Ruhlmann. A co-founder of the modernist Union des Artistes Modernes (UAM) before his sudden death in 1929, Legrain's work served as a bridge between classic French craftsmanship and the modern avant-garde.
