ABOUT MATHIEU MATEGOT
Mathieu Matégot, the Hungarian-born French designer and artist born on April 4, 1910, played a pivotal role in shaping the landscape of furniture and metalwork design. After moving to Paris in 1931, where he was inspired by Le Corbusier and the modernist movement, Matégot established the Société Matégot to manufacture his innovative creations, showcasing a keen interest in industrial design and new materials. While his early works can be found in esteemed institutions like the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York, Matégot redirected his focus to tapestry design in 1959, contributing significantly to the French modern tapestry movement. His distinctive furniture designs from the 1950s and 1960s, characterized by perforated metal sheets and tubular steel frames, left an enduring mark on the field, securing his status as a trailblazer and prominent figure in the realms of design and art.
